Sliven (110 000 c, 270 m. above sea level height) is situated on the foot of the Sliven’s Balkan and it’s 270 km from Sofia and 115 km from Burgas. The name of Sliven comes from the town’s situation – the fusion of the plain with the mountain. The town was arisen in the period VII-X century on the road which connects river Danube with Istanbul. The Arabian geographer Idrisi is the first who writes about the town in 1153.
In the times of the Turkish slavery the population here breed hunting falcon and the people guarded the Balkan passages. In 1828 the town is with 20 000 inhabitants. Then, after the Russia-Turkish war more than 15 000 Bulgarians run together with the withdraw Russian soldiers and they settled in Romania, Besarabia and southern Russia.
The town is craft and commercial centre. The production of woolen cloth is developed very well. In 1836 it was found the first factory on the Balkan peninsula and the personnel were 500 workers, today it is a culture memorial. Dealers from Turkey, Poland and Hungary come in the Sliven’s fair. Other important craft in the region is the arms producing.
The guests of the town can visit the Historical museum, the Museum of the revival art. The Hadji Dimitar house-museum is a complex of some restore buildings, inns and agricultural premises of the house. The Ethnographical museum has been housed in the building since XIX century. The memorial of Hadji Dimitar was built in 1935 in the town centre.
600 years old elm is growing in the town centre and it is witness of a lot of events of the town’s history. Seat cable car can lead away the town’s guests for a walk in the Sliven’s Balkan at more than 600 m. above sea level height. Aglikina polyana is 40 km to the Elena’s Balkan.
National Museum of the textile industry is the first textile factory on the Balkan Peninsula - Dobri Zhelyazkov's factory. In the three-storey building have been working 20 spinning machines, 6 mechanical looms and 500 workers. The Museum is the first specialized museum of industrial type in Bulgaria. Exposures are in three main sections - manual textile production, textile crafts and pre-production machine.
Sinite kamani (The Blue Stones) Nature park puts an 7094.1 hectares varied, steep and very uneven relief. The park is enclosed of spacious woods. The air here is very clean, the climate is specific wood and landscape. The Blue stones offers wonderful places for tourism and rest. In the resort complex Karandila there are many hotels and lodgings where are offered tourists routes and programs.
Here is peak Balgarka (Bulgarian woman) - 1181 m, the rock phenomenon Halkata (The Ring), Kominite (The Chimney), Kuklite (The Dolls), Enyova bulka (Enio’s bride), Kaloyanovi kuli (Kaloyan’s dolls), the lake Karandila and so on. There are more than 700 plants. 27 of them are in the Red book of Bulgaria. The fauna is very various too.
There were settlers in the neo stone epoch on the park’s territory. In the caves were found stone axes and ceramics of V-III century B.C. There everyone can see ruins from old strongholds and monasteries. The archeological reserve Tuida is a Roman stronghold of III-V century. It’s on Monastery’s river. There are relics of the monastery “St. Spas” more famous like “”St. St. Constantine and Helena” - one of the 24th monasteries which were built in XIII-XIV century, known like the Sliven Sveta gora (St. wood).
Sliven's Mineral Bat's are located in the valley of the river Tundja, at 12 kilometers southwest of Sliven, 245 meters of altitude. The climate is transitional-continental. The mineral water its hot, low mineralized. It is useful to treat the following diseases: digestive (gastrointestinal, liver, biliary, chronic pancreatitis), locomotory and peripheral nervous system.
